Edward C. Leber, 86

Troy - Edward C. Leber, 86, of Diamond Ridge, died Friday, March 7, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a brief illness.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late August Leber and Harriett Alicia (McGarvey) Leber and husband for 65 years of Marie Elizabeth Weychert Leber.

He was raised and resided in Philadelphia until August of 2007, moving to Diamond Ridge. He was a graduate of Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, PA and Army Officer Candidate School.

Mr. Leber was employed for 40 years in commercial banking with Corn Exchange (later Girard Trust) Bank, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Lutheran bowling league over 50 years and an active member, usher and clerk of Trinity Lutheran Church in Germantown for 70 years. He was recently a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Philadelphia and a current congregant of Brunswick Church. He loved all sports, particularly the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles.

He enlisted in the Army in July 1942, and was a Captain and Company Commander in the 252nd Combat Engineer Battalion during World War II, receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European East African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and Word War II Victory Medal.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Janice (Chip) Hindes of West Sand Lake; a sister, Katherine Schleifer of PA and two grandsons, Sgt. Kevin Hindes of Ft. Dix, NJ and Ryan (Jolene) Hindes of West Sand Lake. He was predeceased by three brothers, Fred, Robert and Ray Leber.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 10:00 AM at the Brunswick Church , 42 White Church Lane, Brunswick.

Interment Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
