Granville and Troy NY - Dr. Joseph F. Marcelli, 92, of State Rt. 149 Granville and Locust Avenue Troy died Thursday, December 20, 2018, at his residence after a long illness.
Born in Schenectady, he was son of the late Guiseppe P. Marcelli and Philomena Cavalier Marcelli and husband for 30 years of Marie Susan Peate Marcelli. He had resided in Schenectady until 1952 upon coming to Troy and was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees and his Ph.D. in chemistry.
Dr. Marcelli was Dean of Physical and Health Sciences at Hudson Valley Community College from November 1956 until his retirement in December 1984. Prior to that he was a Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy from 1944-1952 and more recently taught cadkey 10 at Shenendehowa. He worked as a genealogist for the Family History Center withe the Latter Day Saints on Route 9 in Loudonville from 1999-2008.
He was active in many local organizations including a member of board of directors Visiting Nurses Association Capital Region, Long Term Care Eddy, Inc., Home Aid Services of Eastern New York, American Chemistry Society, Troy Rotary Club, American Numismatic Association, a Life member NRA, NY Academy of Sciences, a former communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Schenectady and numerous other organizations. He was one of the partners for the Albany Chapter of the Capital District Coin Association Shows from 1960- present. He attended the Troy Pistol League from 1970-1980. Doc traveled several countries, learned Arabic in Beirut and visited Mount Everest.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a brother-in-law, Lawrence G. Peate and his Goddaughter, Michele and Keith Kreutzer. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick James Marcelli and Vincent Anthony Marcelli.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy Friday, December 28, 2018 from 4-7PM with a funeral service at 7PM with Rev. James Sidoti, officiating.
Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery Schenectady.
