Darwin 0. Miller, 96

North Greenbush - Darwin 0. Miller, 96, died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Samaritan Hospital, Troy.

Born May 1, 1914, in Poestenkill, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Permelia A. Fisher Miller and husband of the late Thelma Mohl Miller.

Mr. Miller grew up in the Barberville area of Poestenkill and was educated in Poestenkill schools and was a graduate of Troy High School.

He worked with his father operating a general store in Barberville. His mother died when he was only 4 years old during the 1918 influenza epidemic.

He served in the Army Air Corp during World War 11 and was stationed in North Africa and Italy on the island of Corsica. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He married his wife Thelma in January 1946.

Mr. Miller went to work at the John A. Manning Paper Mill in Green Island in 1946 and worked there until his retirement in 1979. He became a supervisor there, working out of the mill office.

Darwin was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather very devoted to his family and close friends.

Darwin was an active member of the Poestenkill Evangelical Lutheran Church and served many years on the church council, as Building Fund treasurer and as an usher.

Darwin loved working in his yard at home grooming, planting flowers and feeding the wild birds. He was especially known for his fudge making talent which he gave away to many people.

Survivors include his son, Robert D. Miller and wife Melissa of Wynantskill; his daughter, Lori C. Lape and husband, John of West Sand Lake; his grandchildren, Nicole M. Hollister and husband Jared; Rebecca L. Lape; great granddaughter, Meghan Ann Hollister; sisters-in-law, Gladys Berry and Alice Mohl, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Laura L. Ernst.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 am from DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 4392 Route 150, West Sand Lake, with Rev. Stephen L. Cordes, Pastor of the Poestenkill Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 7 pm. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery in East Schodack.
