Charles L. Dodson Jr., 81

West Sand Lake - Charles L. Dodson Jr., 81, of West Sand Lake Road died Friday, August 16, 2013, at Samaritan Hospital after a long illness.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he was son of the late Charles L. Dodson Sr. and Irene P. Whalen Dodson and beloved husband for 54 years to the late Janet A. Garrahan Dodson who passed away in October of 2012. He had resided in West Sand Lake most of his life and was a graduate of Averill Park High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in science from Cornell University in 1954.

Mr. Dodson was a Vice President at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany for many years retiring in 1988 and the owner of Patroon Nursery in West Sand Lake until November 2011

Charles had many passions which included gardening, carpentry, reading and history.

He is survived by his 4 children, Ann Dodson, Ellen Dodson both of Troy, Kathleen Dodson, West Sand Lake and David (Elaine) Dodson, Brunswick; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Shannon Dodson; his brother Richard (Priscilla) Dodson, New Bern, NC; his brother-in-law Thomas Clickner, West Sand Lake and sister-in-law Gloria Garrahan, Troy; dearest family friend, Norman Warner III; several cousins of the Whalen family; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Riley, who never left his side. He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia P. Clickner and brother-in-law, James Garrahan.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Tuesday, from 4 - 7.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 AM at the funeral home and at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James J. Vaughan.

Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery West Sand Lake.

The family wishes to express its most sincere thanks to Dr. David Strumpf, Sharon Bass, and the Samaritan Hospital ICU staff for their care, kindness and support. And to Charles's many friends who have expressed their appreciation for his intervention in their lives over the last 38 years, the family wishes them to know that he valued their friendship dearly and appreciated their equally positive effect on his life.
