Bernard L. Schmidt, 86

Troy - Bernard L. Schmidt, 86, died suddenly Sunday, October 16, 2011, at Samaritan Hospital.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Frank Schmidt and Agnes Muckle Schmidt and husband of the late Mary Anna Gorski Schmidt. He had resided in Troy all his life and was educated in Troy schools.

Mr. Schmidt was a quality control specialist for Al Tech Specialty Steel in Watervliet for over 25 years retiring in 1971. He worked on the space capsule 'Friendship 7' for John Glenn's flight and was an honor guard for President Roosevelt.

Bernie was a Marine Corp veteran of World War II in the South Pacific, was in the Battle of Iwo Jima, awarded a Purple Heart and fought in Guam and Bougainville and discharged Christmas of 1945. He was also an Army veteran of the Korean War. Bernie was a member of the American Legion of Wynantskill and a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church Troy. He enjoyed his social life with his many friends in Troy.

Survivors include his children, Patricia A. (John) Maloney, Voorheesville, Maryann S. (Robert) Henry, Wynantskill, Joseph R. (Donna) Schmidt, East Greenbush, Francis J. Schmidt, Troy, Deborah (Ronald) Durfee, Ballston Lake, Diane Schmidt, Brunswick and Caroline (Steve) Willson, Brunswick; nine grandchildren, Robert M. Henry Jr., Russell J. Henry, Matthew Maloney, Macaire Cognetti, Erin E. Durfee, Carmine C. Casale III, Maria D. Casale, Rachel C. Willson and Joseph Schmidt Jr.; 3 great grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (Paul) Burniche, FL and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Wednesday from 4-8 PM.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at 9:30 AM at the funeral home and at 10 AM at Our Lady of Victory Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Randall Patterson, Pastor.

Interment will be in Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.
