Barbara A. (Sherwin) Mohan

December 30, 1932 ~ November 20, 2016 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Rensselaer - Barbara A. Sherwin Mohan, 83, formerly of Cedar Run died Sunday, November 20, 2016, at Van Rensselaer Manor after a long illness.

Born in Danbury, CT, she was daughter of the late Clyde Sherwin and Margaret Barry Sherwin and wife of the late James R. Mohan. She was raised in Connecticut and resided in West Sand Lake from 1938-2002.  She was a graduate of  West Sand Lake schools, Catholic Central High School and earned her Bachelors degree from The College of St. Rose and Masters from Vassar College. 

Mrs. Mohan was an educator from 1954-97. She began teaching at Icabod Crane, continued in Averill Park, Milne, and more recently as the Associate Professor/Supervisor in Mathematics at SUNY Albany.  She also supervised off-campus student teachers at SUNYA and later enjoyed opportunities as a Mathematics editor for a local vocational publisher, as a Kelly temporary representative and as director at Sylvan Computerized Testing for professional certifications.

She was a member of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of NYS and was president from 1970-72 and was a member of several local knitting clubs.    

She assisted her parents, many years ago, in their home-based businesses, Sherwin Laundry and Margaret’s Knit Shop.

Barbara and her family volunteered with the ambulance, fire company, Twin Town Little League, Classie Lassies, American Legion and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, to name a few.  She served as an ombudsman and a Literacy Volunteers tutor. At the Beltrone Living Center, she had participated in numerous exercise programs and activities.  Later years have expanded her opportunities for reading, puzzles, genealogy, knitting and travel.

Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Mohan, Rensselaer; three sons, Michael (Cathy) Mohan, Apex, NC, Stephen (Tracey) Mohan, Poestenkill and Robert (Kelly) Mohan, Wynantskill; a brother, Mark (Ann) Sherwin, Burlington, VT; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Margaret Sherwin.

Relatives and friends may call at the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc.  4392 Route 150 West Sand Lake on Tuesday  from 3-6 PM. 

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at the funeral home  and at 11:30 at St. Henry's Church Averill Park were a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas F. Holmes, Pastor.

Interment will be in  St. Henry's Cemetery Averill Park.
