William J. Gordon, 87

North Greenbush - William J. Gordon, 87, died Monday, September 9, 2013, at Van Rensselaer Manor.

Born on March 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles Gordon and Jennie DiCosimo Gordon, and husband for 64 years of Janet Griffin Gordon. Born in the Bronx, NY, he spent his earliest years there before moving to Averill Park. A 1944 graduate of Averill Park High School, he lived for many years in West Stephentown, before moving to North Greenbush in 1987.

Mr. Gordon retired from the US Postal Service, serving as an Accident Investigator. Previously, he was a commercial pilot and flight instructor out of the Pittsfield, MA airport. As a young man, he operated a fruit and vegetable delivery business. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of a flying club called The Secret Order of the Quiet Birdmen, and enjoyed telling stories from his flying days. He had a lifelong passion for automobiles, and was always considering his next car purchase. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wing C1 of Van Rensselaer Manor, and the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County for their wonderful care.

In addition to his wife Janet, survivors include a son, W. Steven (Donna) Gordon, Orlando, FL; a granddaughter, Hillary (Christopher) Chandler, Knoxville, TN; a grandson, Cully Gordon, Albany; three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Madeleine and Annabel Chandler; and many other loving friends and family. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Kenneth Gordon.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Entombment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery Mausoleum, Menands.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of William J. Gordon to The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Boulevard, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
