Vito J. Colangelo, Ph.D.

Brunswick - Vito J. Colangelo, Ph.D., 82, of Brunswick Road died Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Vito Colangelo and Mary DeBonis Colangelo and husband for 48 years of Martha  Dearstyne Colangelo. He had resided in Troy all his life and was a graduate of Troy High School. 

Dr. Colangelo received a B.S. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic institute in 1955, a M.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1961 and a Ph.D in Materials Engineering in 1968. He has authored numerous scientific papers on the behavior of materials including 3 text-books of which he is the principal author. He was initially employed as a metallurgist with Allegheny Ludlum Steel Co. working with high strength steels of the type used in missile motor cases and aircraft landing gear. He then went to United Aircraft Corp. where he worked on special projects including vertical take-off aircraft, the moonsuit and the lunar exploration module.

In 1963 he joined Benet' Laboratories Advanced Engineering Division where he performed failure analyses, conducted improvements in the development of high strength steels used in large cannon. He retired from Benet' in 1988 and co-founded International Technomics Corp., a company specializing in Failure Analysis and Accident Reconstruction which had clients throughout the US.

He enjoyed skiing, sailing, water sports and fishing.    

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Lynda Halttunen, Carlsbad, CA and Suzanne (Thomas) Wagner, Troy; two sons, Daniel (Keri) Colangelo, Salt Lake City, UT and David (Rebecca) Colangelo, Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren, David Halttunen, Christian and Katelyn Wagner and Zachary, Jacob and Arianna Colangelo.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa Aransky and Rose Albano.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc.  276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 4-7 PM. 

Funeral service will be held Saturday at  10AM at St. Anthony of Padua Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Interment will be in  St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum Troy.
