Vilma Maide, 76

West Sand Lake: Vilma Maide, 76, of Route 150, died Friday at the Eden Park Health Care Center in East Greenbush, after a long illness.

Born in Estonia, she was the wife of the late Eduard Maide. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1949 and had resided in West Sand Lake since the early 1960's.


Mrs. Maide was a homemaker and craftsperson, active in 4-H, and voluntarily maintained the NOAA weather station known as West Sand Lake 2-S for over 25 years. She loved flowers and gardening, and was an accomplished seamstress.

She was a founding member of the Albany-Schenectady Estonian Association, where she sang in the choir, and served in the auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, O. T. Maide of Danville, CA; two daughters, L. Helle Maide of White Plains, NY and Leili Anne Johnson of Fort Collins, CO; two brothers Erich Siismets of Andover, CT and Henno Siismets of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Tiiu Maide of Concord, CA, Tiina Maide of Chico, CA and Tiia Maide of Eagan, MN, and several nieces and nephews. A great-grandchild is due in the next few weeks.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00am from the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 4392 Route 150, West Sand Lake, with Rev. Valdeko Kangro, Pastor of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in West
Sand Lake.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday, July 2, from 5-8pm.

The family prefers that contributions in lieu of flowers be made in memory of Mrs. Maide to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer, NY 12144 tel 518-285-8100.
