Sgt. Nicholas Harold Newell

Oceanside, CA - Sgt. Nicholas Harold Newell, USMC, 24, of Rivera Street Oceanside, CA died suddenly Sunday, October 29, 2017.

Born in Troy, he was son of Scott Walter (Melissa) Newell and Tracey Dibble Newell (Fiancé Mike Brienza) and husband since January 15, 2017 of Alaina T. Dunn Newell. 

Sergeant Newell graduated from Tamarac High School in 2011. He attended boot camp in August 2011 and earned the title Marine three months later. Newell went on to attend Military Police School in the end of 2011. Upon conclusion of Military Police School, he was awarded Distinguished Honor Graduate and received orders to Okinawa Japan. In April 2012, Sergeant Newell reported to 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion where he was the then selected to become a Military Working Dog Handler (MWD).  Sergeant Newell was awarded “Top Dog” at the graduation of the Military Working Dog School. He was then later selected to attend Specialized Search Dog School (SSD). Sergeant Newell attended several MWD schools during his time at 3rd LE Bn and was promoted to Sergeant meritoriously. Nick Spent three years with his K-9 family out in Okinawa, Japan where he supported training operations all over the Pacific. In November of 2014, Sergeant Newell executed orders to Joint Base San Antonio Lackland Air Force Base fulfill the role as a SSD Instructor. During his time as an instructor, he certified and graduated over 20 dog teams to include Marine Corps, Army, and Royal Australian Air Force students. Sergeant Newell attended Marine Special Operations Assessment and Selection in April of 2015. After selection In January 2016, he attended the Individual Training Course (ITC) and graduated as a Marine Raider (Critical Skill Operator). Nick was then stationed with 1st Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Special Operations Company Delta, Marine Special Operations Team 8143. It was there that friendship and brotherhood, again turned into his family. Sergeant Newell’s awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. 

Nick loved being outdoors, at the beach, hunting, fishing, boats, snowmobiling, dirt bikes and anything that went fast. There aren't enough words to describe the impact Nick had on everyone he touched. His smile brought light into this world and put everyone at ease. He was a strong mentor. Nick was a devoted son, brother, friend and husband. Nick was a brother that some never had. He loved his family and friends so deeply and loved his wife Alaina fiercely. Most of all, Nick was so excited to become a father and raise his future son or daughter. Never above you, never below you, always beside you!

Survivors in addition to his parents and wife include his brother, David Newell; step sister, Lauren Holt; step brother, Jesse Holt; his dog, Olive and his working military dog, Mako.  

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 4-8 PM. 

Funeral service will be held Saturday, at 10 AM at Brunswick Church, 42 White Church Lane, Brunswick.

Interment will be in  Eagle Mills Cemetery Eagle Mills.
