When I walked into the Christ Church office one midweek day in February 1993, a British Methodist Local Preacher with time to give - I had no working papers back then- Rev. Joe, as I knew him, welcomed me with open arms. He called me a "gift from God" (hardly, but appreciated!) and we became a ministry team. He had great stories of his early congregations including a man in White Plains who had a chimpanzee as his butler! He was welcoming of everyone, had a heart for those who were suffering and was a gifted preacher, not unwilling to burst into a hymn on occasion. And a great chuckle. Thanks for everything, my friend!

Deepest sympathy on the loss of Joe. I know Mary you and your family gave him the greatest support and comfort during his long-term care. Now you are at comfort knowing he is resting in peace with the Almighty Father.

Mary,

Joe was and will always be a magical force of love in our lives. I think of him, and you so often, always with a smile, and always with gratitude. You and your family shared him so generously with the strangers he blessed. We celebrate his life; we celebrate Joe.

I have the highest regard for my colleague, Pastor Joe.

Joe's down-to-earth unmistakable care for people was his trademark, whether it was his wife, Mary, of his children and their families, the congregations he served or people in the communities where he lived.

Joe had a hope-filled outlook on life. He went beyond optimistic -- he expressed the hope of life-fulfilling transformation in which he invited all into a more healing future.

Thank you, Joe, for your very personal expression of the love that Jesus expressed -- a love which Jesus received from the Source of Life and Love. In and through your love many were invited and supported into a life which they could not imagine on their own.

For the gifts you gave to me and so many others, I honor you with gratitude.

Shalom,

Bob Long

Shalom:

Pastor Joe had a VERY significant influence on my journey into pastoral ministry. Shortly after his "official" retirement he served North Main in Gloversville, where I attended. I had some "challenges" to my call, but his Grace & Wisdom & many hours of support got me through. I have served as a Pastor since that time in 1997-98 and currently serve Pine Grove in Colonie. Joe also officiated at my wedding in 2000 in East Greenbush, sadly Karen passed in 2003.

May all who mourn his passing be comforted by the peace of Christ and Christ of peace.

Shalom, Pastor Al Johnson

Papa Joe's heart was so big inside of himself that he shared it immensely to all he met and came in contact with. His laughter and smile put all he was near into a never ending comfort zone which is proven with his wife Mary, their kids, grandchildren, and great grandchild. Papa Joe also had another caring side too. ..like when he took a single person sailboat out on Sebec Lake, played Parchisi game board on a rainy Sebec Lake day, lend a helping hand on shore line cookout days, and providing communion in 1986. Mary our thoughts are with ALL of you. He is missed.
