Nancy A. Rooney Sullo, 61

Troy - Nancy A. Rooney Sullo, 61, of The Crossways died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at her residence after a long illness.

Born in Troy, she was daughter of the late Joseph F. Rooney Sr. and Ann Owens Rooney, stepdaughter of the late Elizabeth Murray Rooney and wife of Pasquale (Pat) Sullo. She had resided in Troy all of her life and was a graduate of Troy Schools, earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology form the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, Master's in Special Education and Certificate in School Administration from the College of St. Rose.

Except for a 27 month interim during which she was Program Director of Unity Sunshine Program, Nancy was employed at Questar III BOCES for over 30 years retiring in 2008. She started in the classroom teaching special needs children with moderate to profound handicapping conditions. Eventually, Nancy held various School Administrator positions involving supervision of programs and staff dealing with severely, multiply handicapped and later, emotionally disturbed, children.

Nancy loved to travel to Europe with husband, Pat, and friends. Her favorite country was Italy - the wine, food, its many splendors, and its joy of life. Her regret was not being able to travel in retirement. She never got to Spain or back to Ireland again, but "We'll always have Paris".

Survivors in addition to her husband include two stepchildren, Pasquale J. (Nancy) Sullo, Troy and Teresina Sullo, Los Angeles, CA; three brothers, Joseph F. (Sylvia) Rooney Jr., Eagle Mills, John T. (Mary Ellen) Rooney, Anaheim Hills, CA and Thomas D. (Phyllis) Rooney, Troy; two additional sisters-in-law, Marilyn Rooney, Troy and Raffaela (Giro) Esposito, New Haven, CT; a grandchild, the 'second' love of her life, Luciano Sullo; nieces and nephews, Louisa Sorriento, Stephen, Jeffrey, Brian, Kevin, Michael and David Rooney, Lisa Henson, Meeghan Kaufman and Giro Esposito and many grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, George M. Rooney.

During her illness, Nancy was overjoyed to receive visits, calls, and notes from many, many friends, former co-workers, and even college and high school friends from years back.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Tuesday from 4-7 PM.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 9AM at the funeral home and at 9:30AM at St. Joseph's Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery Troy.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Nancy A. Rooney to The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County 295 Valley View Boulevard Rensselaer, NY 12144.
