Troy - Myra Anita Taylor Gilliam Herron, 71, of Maple Avenue died Friday, April 14, 2017, at her residence after a battle with cancer which took four parts of her adult life.

Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Herbert S. Taylor and Mary N. Taylor and wife for 36 years of Isom H. Herron. She was a native of Washington, DC until moving to Troy, NY in 1992 when her husband began working as a Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC, class of 1963, and Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA, class of 1967 where she majored in music. Upon graduating in 1967 she began teaching instrumental music for the Washington, DC Public Schools where she taught from 1967-1987. Myra was a cellist, her primary instrument, which she began playing at the age of 8, but was familiar with how to play all orchestral instruments.

Myra was cellist for and a founding member of the ELIZABETH TAYLOR GREENFIELD STRING QUARTET a chamber music ensemble comprised exclusively of African-American women. By invitation she performed twice for the Supreme Court of the United States. After moving to Troy she also performed with the Berkshire Symphony, Glens Falls Symphony (since 1996), Schenectady Symphony and Lake George Chamber Orchestras. Myra was a Board Member and Program Chair for the Friends of Chamber Music in Troy and an active member of the Etude Club of Schenectady. A sincere, believing and practicing Christian, Myra was also a member of the Brunswick Presbyterian Church. At home she enjoyed taking piano lessons from her grandson, Grey!

Myra is survived by her husband Isom, her daughter, Jacquelyn H. (Christopher) Berry; two sisters, Pamela (David) Tyson and Gloria (Pearson) Liddell; a brother, Herbert (Brenda) Taylor, Jr., and her grandson, Grey Berry.
