Martin F. Ratigan

Wynantskill - Martin ‘Marty’ F.  Ratigan, on May 16th at 3:20 PM , in the presence of his family, the Lord welcomed Martin F. Ratigan into his kingdom to join his loving wife, Elizabeth Ann (Betty).

Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Francis and Lucy Ratigan of Glen Ave Troy, NY and a communicant of St. Judes church.  He attended CCHS in Troy and joined the United States Air Force where he served in North Africa in support of the Korean war.  After returning home, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Husser and was married for 60 yrs.

Marty was a local hero when he saved a family from a fire at Griswold Heights and he received a prestige’s award for his heroism. As an accomplished athlete playing in multiple baseball and basketball leagues/ teams in Troy and North Troy,  Marty lettered in Baseball and Basketball at CCHS as well as Hudson Valley Community College and played in the US Air Force. He followed his passion, playing, coaching and organizing multiple sports programs and leagues throughout the Troy and North Greenbush communities.   

He retired from ATT and was a caring & giving person of himself to all.  He was one of the founders of the Twin Town Little League, coached CYO basketball, an inspiration and role model to 100’s of young men. He umpired with the CDUA for many years, was the North Greenbush Athletic Director creating the summer youth program, Men’s Softball League and was instrumental in creating the over 30 basketball league.  He carried this passion over to his children and grandchildren and was a recognized presence at all their games.

He was a member of the Troy Germania Hall where he served as a past President, a life time member of the German American Rod & Gun Club and the Shuchplasttler Verien Alpenklang.  Marty believed in helping others be their best and hard work would pay off.  Some of his famous quotes to his children include:  “You bet your life”, “Land of enchantment”, “Something I learned down at the canal” and “Stay out of the woods”.  These quotes are dear to his children and always will be remembered.

He was predeceased by his spouse, Betty Ratigan Husser and his dearly missed grandson, Nate Ratigan and survived by his five children, Karen(Jeff Sauvie)of Tennessee, Gary(Karen) Ratigan of Wynantskill, Mark (Malinda) Ratigan of Virginia, Chuck(Donna) Ratigan of Texas and Paul(Laura) Ratigan of Wynantskill and his one brother, Bob Ratigan of Fla.  He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. 

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc.  276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 4-7 PM. 

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 AM at the funeral home and at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Interment will be in  St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Martin F. Ratigan to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Lexington 1900 Richmond Road  Lexington, KY 40502.
