Laura Carl Gemmill, 89

Rensselaer - Laura Carl Gemmill, 89, of Valley View Boulevard Rensselaer passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital Troy after a brief illness.

Born in Green Island on January 30, 1919, she was daughter of the late Henry Ertman Carl and Helena Messner Carl and beloved wife of the late John Frederick Gemmill. She had resided in the Troy area all her life.

Mrs. Gemmill was employed by the N.Y.S. Department of Social Services for many years. At the time of her retirement in 1980, she was Supervisor of the Public Assistance Claims Section.

She was currently a member of the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill and previously a member of the former St. Paul s United Church of Christ, Troy, active in that Sunday School and Women's Guild for many years. When St. Paul s federated with St. John s Lutheran Church of Troy she joined their membership. She and her husband were active in many Western Square Dance Clubs in the area, were volunteers in Samaritan Hospital, and members of the Wynantskill Senior Citizens. In recent years, she joined the Poestenkill Senior Citizens.

She was the devoted mother of Nancy Hanhurst of Waterford and Dr. Warren Gemmill of Coconut Creek, FL; mother-in-law of Michael Hanhurst and Joan Sibley Gemmill; grandmother of Adam (Kristee) Gemmill, Todd (Anita) Hanhurst, Lauren Gemmill and Darcy (Michael) Kane and great grandmother of Tyler Hanhurst, Nicholas and Joseph Kane and Cameron and Conor Gemmill. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Frank (Elsie) Upham, Henry C. Carl Sr., A. Gertrude Carl, Mrs. Paul (Alma) Biette and Leopold Carl.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 AM at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy and at 11:00 AM at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church 470 Winter Street Extension North Greenbush with Rev. Kerri Weldon, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1- 5PM.

Interment will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery Troy.
