Karl G.E. Sharke, 87

Green Island - Karl G.E. Sharke, 87, formerly of Lakewood Place in Troy, died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness.

Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Julius Sharke and Martha (Ronafeldt) Sharke and husband of Ann Swensson Sharke.

He had resided in Troy most of his adult life and attended Friends Seminary in New York City, graduated from Washington Irving High School in Terrytown and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with his degree in chemical engineering, class of 1941.

Karl was employed as a chemist at General Electric in Pittsfield and Schenectady, John H. Manning Paper Company, Mt. Ida Mill, at the Watervliet Arsenal as a metalurgist and retired from the City of Troy Water Filtration Plant under John Buckley as a chemist many years ago.

He was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserve, 1st Naval District Headquarters, Boston, MA. He was a former President of the Troy Public School 16 PTA, former member of the Troy Chromatic Concerts Board of Directors, a member of the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary and former member of the Troy Club. At RPI, Karl was a member and advisor to Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity at RPI, was involved in the Alumni Reunion for many years and was awarded the Alumni Key Award and a member of the board of Rensselaer Fraternity Managers.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Kirsten S. (Rev. Pierre) Albrecht-Carrie of Wheatfield, NY and Ingrid Sharke of Green Island; a brother, Albert A. Sharke of Hendersonville, NC;a granddaughter, Elan Albrecht-Carrie of Grand Island, NY; a grandson, Ethan A. Albrecht-Carrie of Lake Placid, NY and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Frederick W. Sharke.

A Memorial service will be held Friday at 8:00 PM at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy with Rev. Pierre Albrecht-Carrie, son-in-law and Pastor of St. Paul's UCC in Alden, NY, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4-8 PM prior to the service.

A private family interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.

Contributions may be made in memory of Karl Sharke to the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary 2215 Burdett Avenue Troy, NY 12180 or the US Bobsled and Skeleton Federation in care of Ethan Albrecht-Carrie 196 Old Military Road Lake Placid, NY 12946.
