Joseph F. Verrastro, 90

N. Greenbush - Joseph F. Verrastro, 90, died Friday, February 10, 2012, at Samaritan Hospital Troy after a brief illness.

Born in Pietragalla, Italy , he was son of the late Theodosio Verrastro and Carmela Cillis Verrastro and husband for 64 years of Jane Frances Massaro Verrastro. Joe was 3 when he moved from Italy to Troy where he has resided most of his life. He was a graduate of School 14, Troy High School, Albany College of Pharmacy and Brooklyn College.

Mr. Verrastro owned and operated Prospect Park Pharmacy in Troy for 20 years and was a pharmacist for Marra's Pharmacy in Cohoes, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks, East Side Seniors, St. Michael's Men's Club and the Bocci League at the Italian Community Center in Troy. He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church. Joe enjoyed gardening, coin collecting and wine making. He vacationed frequently in Italy and enjoyed family vacations on Cape Cod. His biggest joy was family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was an Army veteran of World War II in the European Theatre during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children, Donna Marie Stockdale, Plattsburgh, Joanne Marie (Frank) Skpowski, Valatie, Susan Marie (David Burford) Verrastro, Birmingham, AL, Joseph F. (Janice) Verrastro, Jr., West Sand Lake and Nancy Marie (Kevin) Ryan, Brunswick; a sister, Jane Magnone, Troy; his grandchildren, Marc and Kristen Skpowski and Nicholas, Gregory, and Christopher Ryan; several nieces and nephews and several cousins residing in Italy. He was predeceased by a brother, Rocco T. Verrastro.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Monday from 4-7 PM.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 AM at the funeral home and at 10:30 AM at St. Michael's Church, Williams Road in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. John Provost.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.
