John P. Murtagh, 78

Troy - John P. Murtagh, 78, of Central Avenue died Thursday, June 03, 2010, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn - St. Peter's Hospital Albany after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Patrick Murtagh and Anna Nalley Murtagh and husband for 51 years of Catherine Marion Murtagh. He had resided in Troy all his life and was a graduate of St. Patrick's School, Catholic Central High School class of 1949, Troy Business College and Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

Mr. Murtagh was Senior Vice President and Cashier of the State Bank of Albany, retiring in 1990 after a 40 year career.

He served on several boards as a financial advisor including St. Anne's Institute in Albany, the Epilepsy Foundation Albany, was a member of the Rotary Club of Albany, a member and Secretary of the Country Club of Troy and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Troy. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, stationed in Germany.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, James P. (Marypat) Murtagh of Cohoes; two daughters, Mary Lynn (William) Fahey of Greenland, NH and Kathryn Murtagh, Boston, MA; his grandchildren, Anna Kate (Jeffrey) Connolly, Patrick and Joseph Murtagh, Timothy, Piper and Kevin Fahey and a brother, James (Betty) Murtagh of South Carolina. He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Burke.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy and at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James J. Vaughan.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of John P. Murtagh to St. Peter's Hospice Inn 315 South Manning Boulevard Albany, NY 12205.
