John G. Fatone, 77

Troy - John G. Fatone, 77, of Pawling Avenue died Monday, December 1, 2008 at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness.

Born and lived all his life in Troy, he was son of the late Vito Fatone and Florence (Gervasio) Fatone and husband of the late Norma (Hunter) Fatone, former Troy Councilwoman.

A 1950 graduate of Troy High School, John enlisted in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan in the military train yard. After his service, he was employed with the NY Central Railroad as a tower operator in the North Troy Tower until 1963 and also in Canojoharie and Albany. He and Norma opened Fatone's Gift Shoppe at 776 Pawling Avenue Troy, in 1971 which they expanded when they bought 75 Fourth Street in downtown Troy where they are today which also includes the card shop.

John gave a lifetime of service to the community. He was on the Board of Directors for the Troy Boys Club where he was recognized for 25 years of outstanding service to the community. He was a member of the Troy Kiwanis Club and vice president, a member of the Troy Jaycees, Emerald Athletic Club and the Troy Chamber of Commerce.

John loved everything about Christmas, playing Santa to any and all children, grown ups and patrons. His windows were filled with beautiful dolls, historic toys and trains- thanks to Norma's fine purchases. His love for Lionel trains stemmed from his employment in the 50's and 60's.

John and Norma's personalities together were like a comedy team. Both loved people, were generous with charity to those with or without means. John developed the Senior Citizen's Resource Center in Troy in memory of his beloved Norma.
