James J. Markham, 69

West Sand Lake James J. Markham, 69, of Climer Circle, died Monday at Albany Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He was a devoted husband and father. Born in Troy, he was son of the late Chester and Rose Pollay Markham and husband of Gail Markham. He was raised in Troy, resided in Watervliet and for the past 38 years in West Sand Lake and was educated at St. Joseph's School in Troy, Troy High School and Siena College, class of 1955.

Mr. Markham was an insurance salesman for Liberty Mutual in Albany for 30 years, retiring 12 years ago.

He was a coach for Classie Lassie's in Wynantskill and was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park where he taught religious education many years ago.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Michele Markham Gallivan (Stephen) of Phoenixville, PA, Laurie Humphrey (Mark) of Lanesborough, MA and Christine Slomka (Thomas) of Grand Island, NY; a brother, John Markham (Peggy) of Sebring, FL; a sister, Marie Markham of Rensselaer; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey Aransky of Watervliet, John Markham of Wynantskill, Edward and Linda Markham of Watervliet, and Sam Kowala of Rensselaer. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 9:00am from the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 4392 Route 150 West Sand Lake, and at 9:30am from St. Henry's Church in Averill Park where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-8pm. Interment St. Henry's Cemetery in Averill Park.
