John Paul Ryan, 76

Troy John Paul Ryan, 76, died Monday, August 5, 2002 at his residence after a brief illness.

Born in Troy. Paul was the son of the late Frank J. and Jane Ryan. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Kahn Ryan. His wife Sally Ann MacNulty Farano Ryan survives him. Paul was educated at St. Paul's School, La Salle Institute in Troy and Siena College in Loudonville. As a student athlete Paul played basketball, baseball and football. At La Salle he was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete - class of 1944. The love of sports did not diminish after his school career. Through out his life he was an avid skier and was on the National Ski Patrol. He also enjoyed golf, tennis and platform tennis.

Paul and his brother Robert were the owners of Frank J Ryan & Sons Inc. a well-known Troy paint contracting firm and retail paint store established by their father, Frank J. Ryan, in 1937. He was former President of Capital District Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, a member of the joint commission that formed the Eastern NY Contractors Association where he eventually served as president. He was a member of the Board of Directors and a past President of the Troy Boys Club, and former member of the advisory board of St. Coleman's Home. He was a member of the Troy Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. He was a Minister of the Host and Cup at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

Besides his wife Sally Ann, Paul is survived by his daughter Kathie Johnstone and her husband Bill of Marietta, Georgia; a son, Chris Ryan and his wife Brenda of Troy and Sally Ann's daughter, Maria Farano of Troy. He is "Poppie " to Jessica and Scott Johnstone, J.P., Eric, Shawn, Korrinne and Tim Ryan and Alicia and Arianna Murray. Paul is also survived by his brother Robert "Toddy". Two brothers Vincent and Pat Ryan, and a sister, Jane Cloutier, predeceased him. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday morning at 9 am from Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues Troy followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis de Sales Church at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to The Troy Boys and Girls Club, 1700 7thAvenue, Troy, New York, or a charity of ones choice, in memory of J. Paul Ryan.
