Poestenkill - Frank E. Wittman Sr., 91, of Main Street died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Van Rensselaer Manor after a brief illness.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late Herman E. Wittman and Florence Scouler Wittman and husband of the late Jane H. Bott Wittman. He had resided in Poestenkill most of his life and was a graduate of Troy High School.
Frank was Superintendent of Grounds at Hudson Valley Community College for 15 years retiring in 1982. Prior to that he worked for Dairylea Creamery at the milk bottling plant in North Troy for 22 years until its closing.
Active in Rensselaer County Republican politics, he was Poestenkill Town Supervisor from 1964-70, Rensselaer County Legislator for the 5th District from 1974-85, Republican Town Chairman for 12 years and a President of the Poestenkill Republican Club. He was also very active in community affairs including a charter member of the Sullivan-Jones Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post in Poestenkill, a 50 year member of the Poestenkill Fire Company and Captain of the Rescue Squad for 10 years. He was a 70 year member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poestenkill, the Men's Brotherhood and a 30 year member of the Church Council. Frank was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Ann (Dr. George) Prior, Pottstown, PA and Linda J. (Clarence) Williams, Allentown, PA; a son, Frank E. (Carol) Wittman Jr., Poestenkill; a sister, Marina Hakman, Chatham, NJ; five grandchildren, Susan (Daniel) Reed, David (Melissa) Prior, Mark (Hetti) Prior, Lisa (Keith) Fisher and Michael (Ann) Williams and 13 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call at the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 4392 Route150, West Sand Lake on Sunday from 5-7 PM.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 10AM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poestenkill, Farm to Market Road, Poestenkill with Rev. Stephen Cordes, Pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Eagle Mills Cemetery, Eagle Mills.
