Everett L. Wagar, 85

Grafton Everett L. Wagar, 85, of NY route 2, died Thursday at his residence after a long illness.

Born in Grafton, NY he was son of the late Joseph and Leta Agan Wagar and loving husband for almost 66 years of Irma E. Corbin Wagar. He had resided in Grafton all his life, was educated in industrial arts at Grafton Schools and was a graduate of Troy High School.

Mr. Wagar was a machine maintenance worker at Huyck Mills in Rensselaer for 43 years retiring in 1980.

Active for many years in the Grafton Fire Company, he was a founding member and its Chief for 30 years. He was Fire Commissioner for the district for 20 years, an Honorary Life Member of the Fire Commissioners, a Deputy Fire Coordinator for Rensselaer County and in charge of the radio tower. Mr. Wagar was a founder of the Grafton Rescue Squad; a member of the Grafton United Methodist Church where he was former President of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Official Board. He was also a founder and Trustee of the Grafton Library, a member and Trustee of the Grafton Historical Society, a US meteorological weather recorder for over 45 years and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a brother Merritt E. Wagar (Marjorie) of Grafton; a sister-in-law, Betty Wagar of Grafton; his nieces and nephews, Denny, Jim and Dick Frank, Chris Schillinger, Richard, James and Jeff Wagar, Joanne Lewis, Robert, Donald and Eugene Wagar, Carol King and Pat Corbin and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Earl L. Wagar.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 11am from the Grafton United Methodist Church Route 2 in Grafton with full fire department honors.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. corner of Pawling Avenue at Maple Avenue Troy on Sunday from 2-5pm. Interment Grafton Cemetery in Grafton.

Everett's family bestows sincere thanks to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, Southwest Vermont Health Care Oncology Associates, especially Dr. Charlene Ives, and friends and family for there support and prayers.
