Elizabeth Estey Westbrook

Troy - Elizabeth Estey Westbrook, longtime resident of Troy, died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Our Lady of Mercy, Life Center, Guilderland, after a brief illness.

Born and educated in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of G. Howard Estey and Edith Gurley Estey. Liz was a member of the class of 1942 at Skidmore College.

Liz met her late husband, James S. Westbrook, Jr. at a USO dance while he was on leave from the Merchant Marine. They were married in December, 1944.

The Westbrooks lived briefly in Plattsburg, NY before talking up residency in Troy where Jim joined the English Department at RPI. In 1951 Liz became administrative assistant at Emma Willard School in Troy, remaining in that position for 40 years. She previously worked at Russell Sage College.

Elegant and regal, Liz was an avid tennis player into her 80's and took up paddle tennis in her 70's. She and Jim were the driving force behind the Troy Tennis Association for many years.

Liz was very active in the community, holding memberships in the Junior League of Troy, Troy Chromatics Concerts, Rensselaer County Historical Society, the RCCA, and Schuyler Meadows Club. She served on the Board of Directors of Friends of Chamber Music. She also served as secretary to the Rensselaer County Liquor Dealers' Association. Liz was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy.

Survivors include two beloved daughters, Diana Westbrook (Robert M. Cartmell) of Albany and Elizabeth Gurley Westbrook Hydes of NYC, and a son, Philip Westbrook (Linda) of Lacey, WA; two brothers, George (Olla) Estey of N.J., and Charles Estey (Ruth) of Delmar; a sister, Mary Nash of Kennett Square, PA.; two grandchildren Philip David Westbrook (Deborah) of Las Vegas,NV and Danielle Westbrook of Olympia, WA; a great granddaughter J. Brianna Westbrook and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service Saturday, April 30, 2005 at l0:30 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church l46 First St. Troy with Rev. Dr. Harold Carrier, Rector, officiating.
