Edna R. (Conger) Sturges

Troy - Edna R. Conger Sturges, 92, of Beechwood Apartments Burdett Avenue died Saturday, January 3, 2015, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn after a brief  illness.

Born in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late Lynn Conger and Gertrude Mae Hendrick Conger and wife of the late Robert W. Sturges who died December 5, 2003, 1week before their 60th Wedding  Anniversary. She was raised in Springfield where she resided until 1943, then Bar Harbor, ME, New Jersey from1952-1979 and then to Troy. She was a graduate of Springfield Commerce H.S. in MA in1940, obtaining a paralegal certificate in1975. 

Mrs. Sturges was employed as an Administrative Assistant and Paralegal for Dumont High School Board of Education, Coast Metals Inc., Literacy Volunteers and various law firms in Bergen County NJ.   

Edna was a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy, where she had served in numerous capacities including the Vestry, the Altar Guild, a Thrift Shop volunteer and Co-Chair of  the Haiti Partnership Project.  She had a big heart and a strong commitment to help those less fortunate. Her volunteer work in the community included literacy  volunteers, hospice care, homeless shelters and homes for battered women.

Edna was an extremely well read and a self-educated woman. Although her son and grandchildren all have college and post-graduate degrees, she was generally regarded as the most educated member of the family.  Edna was pre-deceased by Robert, her husband of nearly 60 years.  They shared many happy years together hiking, skiing, enjoying the performing arts, sports and traveling the world.  They were both devoted parents, grandparents and great grandparents).  

She was a member of the Thursday Morning Club, a longtime member of Bethany Hospitality Center Board, Literacy Volunteers and Head of the Library Committee and Book Club at Beechwood Apartments.    

Survivors include a son, Robert (Nancie) Sturges, Coral Gables, FL; three grandchildren,  Lauren Sturges Fernandez, Brad Robert Sturges and Darren Daniel Sturges; four great grandchildren, Jackie Fernandez, Layla Sturges, Daniel Sturges Fernandez and Evelyn Brielle Sturges all of Coral Gables, FL.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc.  276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Monday from 4-7 PM. 

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 8:30 AM at the St.  John's Episcopal Church 146 First Street Troy with with Rev. Stephen Schlossberg , Rector, officiating.

Interment will be in  Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Edna R. Sturges to the St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund 146 First Street Troy, NY 12180.
