REMEMBERING HELEN GARDNER - I grew up in First Church thanks to Helen introducing my Mom & Dad (Leona & Rodney Chipp) to the church in the ‘40s when Dr. Raymond Clee was senior minister. I have known Helen my entire life. We have a long history - over 70 years! I must admit I'm in a bit of a shock as I thought, until her nephew Hugh called me last summer with news Helen had had a bad stroke, that she was indestructible. I was convinced that she was going to live past 100!
One of my first memories of Helen is when she would come to pick up Dad in the school suburban to take the school census every summer. I have fond memories of picnics at Helen’s house in the country and making friends with her dog. As a young teenager, I joined the adult church choir and sang with Helen for several years until I went away to college. I remember World History class my sophomore year in high school when “Helen” became “Miss Gardner”, but only in class.
Whenever I was home from college, graduate school or teaching at Wells College and later NSU in Oklahoma, I would visit Helen at her country home. In the ‘80s when Helen & the late Alice Bennett were on one of their trips, they had a stop-over in Tulsa. My then-husband Fred & I met them down town & gave them a “cook's tour” of our city. It was a great city then - even better now with one of the country’s top opera companies which Helen would have greatly enjoyed. We kept in touch over the years with cards and letters and occasional phone calls.
Words cannot convey the great love and respect that I have for you, Helen. I miss you! May you rest in peace.
