Brunswick - Thomas V. Casey MD, 88, of North Lake Avenue, Brunswick died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, after a long illness. Born in Troy, he was son of the late Timothy Eugene Casey and Catherine  Whelan Casey, and husband of 56 years of Marylin McCauley Casey, R.N., a former operating room nurse at St. Mary's Hospital.

Tom received his early education at St. Lawrence School, followed by graduation from Catholic Central High School. During World War II, he saw active combat with the US Army, having received specialized training in chemical warfare. Tom served throughout Europe, initially with the 1567th Battalion before being brought to the front during the Battle of the Bulge.  Following his discharge he entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Tom was awarded one of the first New York State scholarships for the study of medicine. Following his graduation from Albany Medical College, he served a rotating internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Tom then completed a three year residency at Albany Medical Center, where he was a research fellow in Endocrinology and Metabolism, focusing on research in diabetes with Thomas F. Frawley and Dr. John Runyan.

Dr. Casey was a member of the faculty of Albany Medical College, where he taught internal medicine. Tom was a senior physician in the outpatient department of the Albany Veterans Hospital and a member of the St. Mary and Samaritan Hospital physician staff. Tom also served as an advisor to the Samaritan Nursing School, was a member of the American Diabetes Association and the Northeastern New York Society of Internal Medicine.  

Dr. Casey was a member and former director of St. Luke’s Physicians Guild and Director of the Menands Workshop. Tom held memberships in the American Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, the Rensselaer County Medical Society, and the Troy Country Club.

Throughout his notable medical career, Tom's private practice was run out of his boyhood home at 303 Third Street in Troy. Retiring from private practice in 1991, Tom continued working at the Stratton VA Medical Center until 1998.

Survivors include his wife Marylin and five sons: Dr. Christopher W. (Kathryn) Casey of San Antonio, Texas; Matthew P. (Michele) Casey of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Thomas V. (Elizabeth) Casey II of Brunswick, New York; Stephen M. (Ellen) Casey of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; and Andrew M. (Barbara) Casey of Southborough, Massachusetts; as well as15 loving grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter Caryn J. Casey; as well as his brothers William and John, and sister Mary Casey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev Randall Patterson, Pastor, at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue in Troy. The mass will be held on Saturday September 29th at 8:30AM. Interment will be in Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville on Monday October 1st. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Thomas V. Casey MD to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Adoration Chapel St. Augustine’s Church, 25 - 115th Street Troy, NY 12182.
