Norbert F. Hepfinger, PhD, 80

Troy - Norbert F. Hepfinger, PhD, 80, of 24th Street died Saturday, December 29, 2012, at his residence after a long illness.

Born in Erie, PA, he was son of the late William Hepfinger and Theresa Wally Hepfinger and husband for 57 years of Lois Gatesman Hepfinger. He had resided in Troy since 1949 and was a graduate of St. Joseph School in Erie, PA., earned his Bachelor's degree from Gannon University in Erie and his Doctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his post Doctorate work in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Dr. Hepfinger was a Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for 45 years retiring in 1994 teaching Organic Chemistry and Freshman Chemistry and formerly worked at Celanese in New Jersey as a chemist.

He was a past President of the Taconic Lake Association and enjoyed spending time on the lake in Grafton, a member of the Diocesan School Board for several years, a Boy Scout Leader of Troop #550 for several years and RPI Chemistry Department Associate Chairman. He was a carrier pilot in the US Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors in addition to his wife include four sons, Mark Joseph (Lisa) Hepfinger, Holliston, MA, David Jerome (Kathy) Hepfinger, Lewisburg, PA, Norbert James (Gale) Hepfinger, Candia, NH and Andrew John (Colleen) Hepfinger, Prospect, KY; a daughter, Theresa Ann (Mark) Lee, Chicago, IL; a sister, Mary Ann (Al) Cook, Erie, PA; a brother, Joseph Hepfinger, Erie, PA; his grandchildren, Matthew, Marc, Jackie, Amanda, Kasie, Jacob, and Alexandra Hepfinger and Austin and Marissa Lee and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at the Christ Sun of Justice at the RPI Chapel and Cultural Center Burdett Avenue Troy on Wednesday from 4-6:30 PM with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 6:30 PM with Rev. Edward Kacerguis, Pastor.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Norbert F. Hepfinger to the Christ Sun of Justice Church RPI Chapel and Cultural Center Troy, NY 12180.
