Dr. D. Wayne Johnson, Ed.D., 67

Poestenkill - Dr. D. Wayne Johnson, Ed.D., 67, of Route 351 died Thursday, September 26, 2013, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

Born in Akron, OH, he was the son of the late Donald Russell Johnson and Virginia Hathaway Johnson. He was raised in Wolcott, NY, where he worked on his grandfather's farm until leaving to attend Otterbein College in OH for a year on a baseball and basketball scholarship. He returned to NY, and earned his BA in Elementary Education and his Master's Degree in Education Administration from SUNY Oswego. He later earned his Doctorate in Education Administration from Columbia University, in New York, NY. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1969, and served two years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA, Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX, and Lockborne AFB, Columbus, OH.

Wayne was married to Sharon Merrifield Johnson for 16 years. Survivors in addition to his wife include son, Corey Johnson, Weymouth, MA; two daughters, Kelly (Manuel) Marrufo, Brunswick, and Rachel (Kyle) Hoffman, Averill Park; a brother, Robert (Cathy) Johnson, The Villages, FL; four grandchildren, Lucas Marrufo, Ryan and Cooper Johnson, and Charlotte Hoffman.

Wayne worked in education for 40 years. He taught in Red Creek, NY, while earning his Master's Degree, and then advanced to administration as Elementary Principal in Ripley, NY, and Ticonderoga, NY. He later became Superintendent of Schools of Jeffersonville-Youngsville CSD, Jeffersonville, NY. He taught Education Administration at Texas Christian University for two years before returning to administration as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Averill Park, NY. He returned to his roots as Elementary Principal of West Sand Lake Elementary School in APCSD before retiring in 2005. He has most recently served as an Adjunct Professor in the Education Department at The College of St. Rose, and Hudson Valley Community College.

Wayne was an active member of Brunswick Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and was a leader on the Welcome Support Team, was a former volunteer fireman, and a motorcycle enthusiast, who used to ride with the Blue Knights in the Catskills. He served as a member of Sand Lake Kiwanis.

Wayne was the happiest when with his family, especially sitting lakeside in an Adirondack Chair around Pleasant Lake in Stratford, NY.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service which will be held Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 11 AM at the Brunswick Church, 42 White Church Lane, in Troy.
