Dororthy Whiteside

Shelburne VT - Dororthy Whiteside passed away peacefully, Saturday October 1, 2011.

Born the daughter of the late Edna Cottrell Willetts and Allen E Willetts, Dorothy was raised in Troy NY. She was a graduate of Syracuse University where she received her Bachelors degree in music. She settled there for a number of years, married Richard Robarts Whiteside in 1950 and later moved to Newark New York, where she raised 2 children until her husbands untimely death in 1969. Dorothy was the organist and music director at Dewitt Community Church in Syracuse, Newark United Methodist Church and later in Churches in Troy and Mechanicville, NY. She also taught music at St. Michael's school in Newark. After her husbands death she moved back to her hometown of Troy, where she completed her Masters in Education at Russell Sage College. She taught music and primary education until her retirement. She spent most of the last decade living in Burlington VT near her son.

As a widowed mother Dorothy made many personal sacrifices in order to save enough money to put both her children through college. Her life focus was always on her family.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jim Walker, her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cynthia Whiteside; her sister and nephew, Hilda and Jim Wallis; her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Willetts and her grandchildren, Sarah and Christine Whiteside and Lauren and Jeffery Walker. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Willetts.

We will always cherish our memories of her and her devotion to family.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 AM at Christ Church United Methodist 35 State Street Troy with Rev. Nina Nichols , Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery Troy.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Dorothy Whiteside to the Oakwood Cemetery Head of 101st Street Troy, NY 12180.
