Donald Monroe Oliver, 82

Averill Park - Donald Monroe Oliver, 82, of Sheer Road died Monday, January 12, 2009, at St. Peter's Hospital Albany after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Howard Monroe Oliver and Mintha Rich Oliver, husband of the late Millicent Biittig Oliver. Residing in Averill Park most of his life, he was a 1944 graduate of Averill Park High School and Albany Business College.

Mr. Oliver was a Supervisor at the New York State Commission for Blind and Visually Handicapped for 19 years retiring in 1990. Previously he worked for Behr-Manning, Ludlow Valve, Montgomery Ward, Eastern Tablet, Albany Plate Glass and Faith Mills.

He was active in Twin Town Little League, was a West Sand Lake and Averill Park Scout Leader, and served Trinity Lutheran Church as Treasurer for 10 years and member of the Church Council. Honored as a 50 Year Volunteer Life Member of West Sand Lake Fire Department, he had served as Fire Commissioner for 10 years. Don also was a member of the Tamarac Twirlers Square Dancers, the Stephentown Valley Rod and Gun Club, The Hendrick Hudson Fish and Game Club and the NRA. A Navy veteran of World War II serving in Guam and Hawaii and a Korean War veteran. As a young man he had served as a member of the NY Guard and worked as a plane spotter during World War II in the Averill Park area.

Survivors include his children, Peggy J. Oliver of Nassau, Janet K. Oliver of Averill Park, Gretchen Romanelli of West Sand Lake, Stephen M. (Benita) Oliver of Troy, Charlotte (Steven) Harris of Briarcliff Manor, NY and Brian J.(Tricia) Oliver of Averill Park; six grandchildren, Daniel Romanelli, Brittany, Brea and Bryan Oliver, Sean Harris and Donald G. Oliver, three sisters, Virginia (Rev. Eldon) Snyder of Kenmore, NY, Caroline Nash of Syracuse and Jane Weber of Taborton and several nieces and nephews, He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Jennifer Romanelli and Bryce Oliver; a brother, Douglas Oliver; and two sisters, Ethel Hellum and Judy Dobert.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church Route 150 West Sand Lake with Rev. James A. Hulihan, Pastor, and Rev. Eldon Snyder, brother-in-law, officiating

Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in West Sand Lake.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life reception following the service at 2:30pm at the church fellowship hall.
