Catherine A. (Biittig) Downs

Cohoes — Catherine "Kay" Ann Downs, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Eddy Village Green.

Born February 5, 1922, in Troy she was the daughter of the late Walter and Katharina (Brerrer) Biittig. Kay grew up on a farm with her nine brothers near West Sand Lake, NY and graduated from Averill Park High School in 1940. In 1942 she married George C. Downs of Green Island. Kay and George raised three sons next door to the Biittig family farm on the road that now bears the Biittig name. 

Kay and George both worked at the Watervliet Arsenal. After George passed away in 1973, Kay continued to live on Biittig Road. She enjoyed traveling to Florida with friends and her brother John Biittig and his wife Fran and her companion Allen Strock. She moved to Melbourne, FL with Allen, and returned to live in East Greenbush, NY in 2006 after Allen passed away.

Kay was predeceased by her husband George, her great granddaughter, Gianna Marotta, and her nine brothers: Walter, Oswald, Joseph, Frederick, Edward, John, Richard. Anthony, and Thomas. She is survived by three sons: Christopher (Sara) Downs of Horseheads, NY; Timothy (Susan) Downs of Milton, VT; Daniel (Barbara) Downs of Averill Park, NY; and one sister in-law, Dorothy (Thomas) Biittig, of Melbourne, FL.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

There  will be no services at this time. A memorial service honoring Kay will be held at a later date. 

The family wishes to thank the staff at House 1 at Eddy Village Green for their care of Kay during the two years she lived there.
