Carolyn O. Nash, 78

East Greenbush - Carolyn O. Nash, 78, died Friday, April 5, 2013 at Evergreen Commons Nursing Home in East Greenbush, NY after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Howard Oliver and Mintha (Rich) Oliver and wife of the late Paul E. Nash for 47 years.

She resided in the Averill Park and Rensselaer County area for almost all of her life and was a graduate of Averill Park High School, class of 1952. She earned her Bachelor of Science with a major in Elementary Education from the State University Teachers College in Oneonta, class of 1957.

Carolyn was employed as a teacher in the Averill Park Central School District from 1957 until 1962 when she semi-retired to raise her family. She continued to work as a substitute teacher in the same school district for more than 25 years. In 1979 she became the Youth Director for the Town of Sand Lake, a job she held until 1987. She was active in the Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council as a troop leader, neighborhood chairperson, council trainer, board member, and consultant. She became a Program Manager for the Girl Scout Council in 1988.

She was passionate about championing children's causes and served as an area representative for the American International Scandinavian Student Exchange Program from 1983 until 1988. She was a proud supporter of numerous children's charities.

Carolyn was an active member of the Church of the Covenant in Averill Park where she served as Chairperson of the Trustees, Superintendent of the Sunday School program, advisor for the Youth Group, and sang in the church choir. She was president of the United Methodist Women for 2 years, and served as a District and Conference Officer of the United Methodist Women, Troy Conference.

In addition, she was an avid supporter of the Twin Town Little League program which was co-founded by her late husband in 1952.

Survivors include her daughter, Wendy E. Nash of Cicero; two sons, Scott H. Nash (Carol) of Latham, and Jeffrey E. Nash; four grandchildren, Michael Gardner and Jane Gardner of Latham, and Zachary Nash and Justin Nash of Cape Coral, FL; two sisters, Virginia (Rev. Eldon) Snyder of Buffalo, and Jane Weber of Taborton, a sister-in-law, Nancy Nash of North Syracuse, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brothers Donald Oliver and Douglas Oliver, her sisters Ethel Hellum and Judith Dobert, her brother-in-law, Donald Nash, and a granddaughter, Kayla Nash.

Relatives and friends may call at the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, 4392 Route 150, West Sand Lake, Friday April 12th from 4-7 PM.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 13th at 10 AM at the Church of the Covenant on Route 43 in Averill Park with Rev. Merry Watters, pastor, officiating. Interment in Sand Lake Union Cemetery.
