Benedict J. Nobes

Latham, NY - Benedict Joseph Nobes, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2016, at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family. 

Ben was born in Rochester, New York, and lived in the Poestenkill/West Sand Lake area for many years. He was son of the late Joseph and Dolores (Balsam) Nobes. He is predeceased by his wife, Elsie (Follmer) Nobes; his brother Joseph Nobes, his son, Michael Nobes, his grandson, Joshua Ray; and Baltimore, MD natives and mother- and father-in-law Henry and Daisy Follmer; brother- and sister-in-law Sonny and Polly Ramage; brother-in-law Hank Turner, and several nieces and nephews. 

Ben served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, and earned the National Defense Service Medal for his service during the Korean War era. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers for more than 50 years, retiring from his career as a surveyor in 1994. He spent a good portion of his career working on the South Mall and SUNY Albany construction projects and at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Oswego, New York. He was a loving husband, father, Pop Pop and Great Pop Pop. He gave his wife, children, and grandchildren an everlasting gift of memories and all the joys of growing up in the country surrounded by animals and nature - endless days of fishing, swimming, skating, day hikes and picnic lunches, biking, picking berries, climbing trees, finding fiddleheads, Red Effs and lady’s slippers, and making princess pine wreaths.

Survivors include a sister, Joanne Hoey of New Jersey; a son, Benedict (Lynn Kocik) Nobes, Grafton; two daughters, Gail (Paul) Belles, Averill Park and Donna (John) DeMaria, East Greenbush; his beloved grandchildren, Nick Nobes, Grafton, Angie (Ed) Francis, Averill Park, Lindsay (Kevin) Boutot, Watervliet, Darcy DeMaria, East Greenbush and John DeMaria (Aliscia Warman), Troy; and his great granddaughters, Meya Francis and Arya Boutot. He is also survived by his sisters-in law Dorothy Nobes and Doodle Turner, brother-in-law Buddy Follmer, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home in West Sand Lake on Friday, September 9 from 10-11:00 a.m. followed by a prayer service and interment at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in West Sand Lake.
