Arthur P. Smith, 89

Rensselaer - Arthur P. Smith, 89, of Patroon Pointe Drive died August 15, 2008 at St. Peter's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Menands, he was son of the late Arthur Smith and Lelia Smith Ball and husband and best friend of Ruth Noord Smith.

Arthur graduated from Milne High School. He was employed for 33 years at W.R. Grace selling construction products.

Arthur served as an Army medic in the European Theatre during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a past United States Power Squadron Commander.

A founder and Scout Master for Troop 41 BSA, Arthur was awarded the Silver Beaver Leadership Award. He was also past secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake and a past Camp Commander of the Sons of Union War Veterans of the Civil War, Col. Willard Camp.

He was a life long choir member, most recently found a home at the Church of the Covenant. He was a past member of the Troy Vocal Society. Arthur was an avid sailor, RV'er, and clock builder.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three children, Barry (Fran) Smith, Bruce (Bernie) Smith and Deborah (Tony) Barbaro , three step children, Linda (Rick) McCabe, Carol (Henry) Bluhm , and David (Roberta) Wasson, 6 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews ,and cousins. He was the brother of Donald Smith of Arkansas, Richard Smith of Connecticut, and Beverly Scott of Menands and was predeceased by his sister, Lelia Williams.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 6pm at the Church of the Covenant Route 43 Averill Park with Pastor Merry Watters officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the CHURCH from 4-6pm prior to the service. Interment will be in the Bloomingrove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
