Arthur S. Miller, 89

West Sand Lake - Arthur S. Miller, 89, of Route 43 West Sand Lake died Wednesday, December 01, 2010, at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Sand Lake, he was son of the late Edmund A. Miller and Cora May Hidley Miller and husband of the late Pauline Ryemiller Miller. He had resided in Sand Lake his entire life and attended Averill Park Schools.

Mr. Miller worked with his father as a mason contractor, was employed at the Watervliet Arsenal, 35 years as a passenger and freight car inspector in Colonie and Albany at the D&H Railroad, was a school bus driver for the Averill Park School District and a member and the first Chief of the Sand Lake Police Department many years ago.

He was a member since 1940 of the West Sand Lake Fire Company and a life member and former Chief for 12 years, a charter member life member and founding father of the Sand Lake Ambulance, a member of the Rensselaer County Law Enforcement Association and the Averill Park Sgt. Walter Adams American Legion for 55 years. A life member and past President of the Rensselaer County Fire Chiefs Association and a life member of the NYS Fire Chiefs Association and a member of the National Railroad Brotherhood, the NYS Police Chiefs Association and Gilead Lutheran Church. He was also the superintendent of Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery and Elmwood Cemetery in West Sand Lake many years ago and a veteran of the Coast Guard. Art and his wife enjoyed traveling and crossed Canada and traveled to Flagstaff on a train, in addition to camping and spending 13 winters at Myrtle Beach.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Joseph) Lamando of Delaware; a son, Edmund C. (Yvonne) Miller of West Sand Lake; a brother, Rev. Gerald Miller, Ret. Bishop, Mechanicsburg, PA; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jeannette Miller, a sister, Evelyn Wilson, and a brother, Raymond E. Miller.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 AM at Gilead Lutheran Church Center Brunswick with Rev. James A. Hulihan, Pastor, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 4392 Route 150 West Sand Lake on Sunday from 4-7 PM.

Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery West Sand Lake.
