Alexander G. Murphy

July 17, 1918 ~ April 5, 2016 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Troy - Alexander G. Murphy, 97, of Pinewoods Avenue died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his daughter’s  residence after a long illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Edward J. Murphy and Ruth E. Cadmus Murphy and husband of the late Elsie P. Hoffman Murphy and Rosemary Harlan ‘Midge’ Riegert Murphy. He had resided in the Troy area all his life and was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College. 

Alex and his brother, Ed, were co-owners of Murphy's Oil and Hardware and Edoral Reality. He was builder and owner of the Tamarac Plaza, Inc.  

Alexander helped found with his brother Joe, the Brunswick VFW Post 831 and was a member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks, the Kiwanis Club, Eagle Mills Fire Department, Brittonkill Board of Education and former President, the Brunswick Republican Club and a Brunswick Town Councilman. For years, he spent at least one month a year camping in the Thousand Islands. In the late 60's he took his love of the water, boating and fishing to his camp at Saratoga Lake where he spent as much time as possible in the summer. He enjoyed playing golf. He loved his scratch offs and was an avid fan of horse racing, the Racino and taking bus trips to Turning Stone and Mohegan Sun. He enjoyed skiing and other winters activities. Alex always remembered his special trips to Austria, Lake Placid, and the Patriot Flight. He was a veteran of the Army and Army Air Force during World War II and proudly served with the 774th Squadron 463rd Group 5th Bombardment Wing - 15th USAAF at Celone Army Air Base - near Foggia, Italy. His plane was the lead crew and he was the bombardier navigator. He flew almost 30 missions.  

Survivors include two daughters, Holly Murphy, Troy and Alexis Murphy, Latham, NY; his stepchildren, Gail Whitefield, Brunswick, Rosemary (Peter) May, Brunswick, Kathy (Philip) Casey, Williamsburg, VA, Holly (Timothy) Fogarty, Speigletown and Nancy (Ian) Farrell, Niskayuna; his step grandchildren, Jennifer Stevens, Eric (Dana) May, Matthew (Lisa) May, Joseph May, Leah Sapienza, Pamela (Christopher) MacEvitt, Meredith (Paul) Goncalves, Melissa Casey, Maureen (Matthew) Houser, Timothy (Erin Alderette) Fogarty, Kathleen (Joseph) D'Egidio, Patrick (Frances) Fogarty, Meagan (Nicholas) Duncan and Adam Farrell and 14 step great-grandchildren. He was also survived by a niece, Beverly R. Murphy, FL; three nephews, Joseph A. (Deborah) Murphy Jr., Nassau, Edward J. Murphy II, FL and Edward B. (Barbara) Murphy Jr., Webster, NY.  He was predeceased by a son, Alexander Murphy Jr.; two brothers, Edward B. Murphy Sr. and Joseph A. Murphy Sr. and a niece, Paulette Murphy Evereth.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10-12 noon with a funeral service to follow at 12 noon with Rev. Lorrie Hart, officiating.

Interment will be in  Eagle Mills Cemetery Eagle Mills.
